What is ping and why does it matter?
Are ping, ms and latency the same thing? How game ping is measured, which values are normal, and how it relates to your internet speed — explained plainly.

Short answer
Ping is how long a small piece of data takes to travel from your computer to the game server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). The lower it is, the sooner your commands reach the server. Ping is a travel time, not a speed — which is why buying more Mbps does not lower it on its own.
What exactly does ping measure?
While you play an online game, your computer constantly sends small packets of data: where you are looking, which key you pressed, whether you fired. The server sends packets back with opponent positions and match state. Ping is how long one of those packets takes to reach the server and return.
That is why ping is also called round-trip time. A ping of 40 ms means a packet you send takes roughly 40 milliseconds to reach the server and have its reply come back. One-way time is roughly half of that.
In player language, 'ping', 'ms' and 'latency' usually mean the same thing. Technically, ms is only the unit.
Why ping and internet speed are not the same
The 100, 500 or 1000 Mbps figure on your plan is bandwidth: how much data can travel per second. Ping is how long that data's journey takes. One is the width of the road, the other is the duration of the trip.
An analogy helps: bandwidth is how many lanes the motorway has, ping is how many hours the drive takes. Adding lanes does not shorten the road. That is why you can see a high download result on a speed test and still feel delay in game.
Bandwidth does affect ping indirectly: if a large download saturates your connection, small game packets queue behind it and ping spikes. The fix there is stopping the download, not buying a bigger plan.
How to measure game ping properly
The most reliable source is the game's own network readout. Counter-Strike 2's Source 2 telemetry, Fortnite's Net Debug Stats or Rocket League's network performance indicators all report the value for the server you are actually playing on.
A speed-test site connects to a different server and takes a brief sample. That tells you something about your home connection's general health, but it does not represent the path to the game server. Confusing the two leads to the wrong diagnosis.
Do not rely on a single instantaneous value either. Watch for a few minutes and note the normal range, the worst spike and any packet loss together.
- Use the game's own network readout, not a speed test.

- Record the average, the spikes and any loss separately.
- Repeat the test at different times of day.
What determines your ping?
The biggest factor is physical distance. Data is bounded by the speed of light and travels somewhat slower through cable. A packet from Istanbul to a server in Frankfurt inevitably takes longer than one to a point within Istanbul.
The second factor is the route. Traffic does not always follow the shortest geographic line; provider agreements and congestion at network exchanges can lengthen the path. The third is conditions at home: Wi-Fi interference, a saturated link or a tired modem all raise ping.
