What is a good ping for gaming?

How many ms counts as good? Realistic ping ranges, what to expect by game genre, and the thing that matters more than a low number.

Short answer

As a rough scale: 0-30 ms is excellent, 30-50 ms is very good, 50-80 ms is playable, 80-100 ms is hard work, and above 100 ms is not suitable for competitive play. But the number alone is not enough — a steady 60 ms almost always feels better than a connection bouncing between 20 and 100.

The ranges below are a widely accepted guide rather than a hard rule. Genre, server update rate and your own sensitivity all shift the result.

  • 0-30 ms: Excellent. Usually only possible on very nearby servers.
  • 30-50 ms: Very good. The typical target for nearby European servers.
  • 50-80 ms: Playable. Noticeable in competitive shooters.
  • 80-100 ms: Hard work. A clear disadvantage in close duels.
  • Above 100 ms: Not suitable for competitive play.

What is realistic for your location?

The lowest ping you can reach is bounded by physical distance to the server you pick. If you can connect to a server in your own country, 10-30 ms may be possible. For common European locations such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Stockholm, players in Turkey commonly see the 40-70 ms band.

On North American servers 120-180 ms is normal, and Asian servers are higher still. No software overcomes these figures; the speed of light and the cable route set a floor.

So before concluding your ping is high, check which server you are connected to. Wrong region selection is the single largest correctable item for most players.

For most players, picking the right region makes more difference than every other optimisation combined.

Sensitivity by genre

In competitive shooters — CS2, VALORANT, Rainbow Six Siege — peeking angles and first-shot timing are sensitive to milliseconds. Here the difference between 60 ms and 100 ms is felt.

In MOBAs and strategy games, ability casts are somewhat more forgiving; 80-100 ms causes no trouble for most players. Fighting games are the most timing-sensitive genre of all, and low jitter matters there especially.

More important than the number: stability

There is a common observation among competitive players: the brain adapts to a constant delay. After a few hours at 70 ms your timing adjusts to it. But if the delay keeps changing, that adaptation never forms.

So judge a connection on three things at once: average ping, fluctuation (jitter) and packet loss. When all three are good, the game feels comfortable even if the number is a little higher.

When judging your connection

  2. 2Measure the average over several minutes.
  3. 3Note the gap between the lowest and highest values.
  4. 4Check whether there is any packet loss.
  5. 5Interpret the number for the genre you play.
