What causes packet loss?

Understand Wi-Fi interference, busy home networks, router problems, provider routing and game-server issues without getting buried in technical terms.

Short answer

Packet loss happens when small pieces of game data cannot be carried somewhere along the connection. The cause may be Wi-Fi interference, heavy home usage, a struggling router, a congested provider route or a problem near the game server.

Think of packet loss like a delivery route

Your computer sends many small envelopes to the game server every second. Each holds one piece of movement or input. The server sends envelopes back with opponent positions and the current match state.

If a queue builds, a wireless signal gets noisy or a device cannot keep up, some envelopes may be dropped. The next envelope can arrive, but that earlier moment is still missing. That creates the brief break or correction you see in a game.

1. Wi-Fi interference or weak signal

The closest cause is often the wireless link inside the home. Distance, thick walls, neighbouring networks and some household devices can disturb it. Full signal bars do not guarantee that every packet arrives cleanly.

A short Ethernet test gives a useful clue. If loss disappears on cable, start with router placement, the Wi-Fi band and home coverage.

2. Too much happening on the home network

A 4K stream, a game download and a cloud backup can build a queue in front of the router. Games use little data, but that data needs to arrive on time. Large transfers can delay or drop the smaller game packets.

Pause large downloads and uploads for a few minutes. If the problem disappears, manage home-network use or carefully review traffic-priority settings on the router.

3. Router, modem or cable problems

A tired router, loose Ethernet cable, failing port or outdated device software can also lose packets. Restarting is not a permanent cure, but it can provide a useful comparison.

Check cables one by one, try another port and make sure the device is not overheating. If every device has the same problem, focus on shared network equipment before one PC setting.

4. Provider routing and congestion

Traffic does not go directly from your home to the game server. It crosses several points chosen by your provider and other networks. If that route is long, congested or unstable, packets can be lost on the way.

Loss that appears only in the evening, from one location or on certain servers makes this more likely. Record the time, server and network graph before contacting your provider.

Route quality is separate from the size of your internet plan. A 1000 Mbps connection can still lose packets on a bad path.

5. The game server or nearby network

If one game or one server region is affected, the cause may not be in your home. Server load, maintenance or a network problem close to the server can create similar symptoms.

Check the game's status page and test another region briefly. If friends on the same server have the same issue, a shared server problem becomes more likely.

What can a route optimizer change?
