Short answer
Packet loss means some of the small pieces of information moving between your computer and the game server never arrive. It can look like rubber-banding, missed shots, frozen opponents or broken voice chat.
First, what is a packet?
A game does not send the whole match as one continuous block. Your movement, aim, shots and the positions coming back from the server travel as many small pieces of information. Each piece is called a packet.
When one packet fails to arrive, that moment's information is missing. Games may estimate the gap or wait for the next update. Some of the strange corrections you feel in a match come from that missing data.
Six common signs of packet loss
Packet loss does not look identical in every game because each engine handles missing information differently. These signs become more convincing when they happen at the same time as a loss warning in the game's network display.
- Your character snaps a few steps backwards
- Opponents freeze, then jump to a new position
- A shot or ability appears on screen but is not accepted by the server
- Opening a door, picking up an item or swapping a weapon repeats
- A car or ball position is suddenly corrected
- Team voice chat breaks into short fragments
One bad duel is not proof of packet loss. Matching the symptom with the network display is much more reliable.
Packet loss vs high ping vs low FPS
With high but steady ping, actions feel delayed while movement can remain orderly. Packet loss is more broken: the connection may feel normal for a moment, then drop an update and pull you backwards.
Low FPS is not a network problem. If the whole screen stutters and mouse movement gets heavy while ping stays normal, the computer may be struggling to draw the game. With packet loss, rendering can stay smooth while online objects jump.

How much packet loss is bad?
There is no single magic threshold. The game's update pattern, whether loss comes in a burst and which direction is affected all change the experience. A tiny isolated loss can pass unnoticed, while several missing packets in a row create a clear break.
Do not rely only on the match average. If the graph shows short repeated spikes, match them to the moments that felt wrong. Also note whether they happen on specific servers or at specific times.
How to check packet loss properly
Use the game's own network statistics first. Fortnite's Net Debug Stats and Rocket League's network graphs show the live match connection. Some games separate incoming and outgoing loss.
A speed test can look healthy while the route to the game still loses packets. It uses a different server for a short measurement, so treat it as a general home-connection check, not the final answer.
If the problem repeats, save a screenshot with the time, server and loss percentage. It gives your internet provider something concrete to investigate.
Try these steps in order
